First stage of the Fellowship examination. Candidates must hold a post-internship qualification to practice medicine which has been registered or is registrable with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. No oral examination.

INTERMEDIATE
Second stage requiring 12 months of approved training in surgery (not including community service). Training must include minimum 6 months neurosurgery, 3 months ICU, and 3 months trauma/emergency surgery. Assesses principles of neurosurgery.

FINAL
Final Fellowship examination. Requires passing Primary and Intermediate, minimum 5 years qualified practice (excluding internship), and 48 months approved neurosurgical training with HPCSA registrar training number. Also requires completion of neurosurgical Portfolio and certification from Head of Department. The ROWLAND A KRYNAUW MEDAL is awarded for distinguished performance.
